Background Information
Skin-Cera® is an extract of Amorphophallus konjac root produced by Vidya Herbs, Inc. Amorphophallus konjac is also referred to as konjac potato. The plant's origins likely start in China, although konjac is now grown across much of Asia. Today, konjac enjoys widespread culinary use in Asia as a flour or jelly.
Dried Amorphophallus koniac root is imported directly from a region most well-known for koniac cultivation-the Gunma Prefecture of Japan-where it has been cultivated since the 16th Century. The material undergoes ethanolic extraction to maximize the presence of the active component, konjac ceramides (also referred to as glycosylceramides). The extraction process occurs at Vidya's state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Bangalore, India.
The mechanism by which Skin-Cera supports skin health may be explained by the role of ceramides in the structure and function of our skin. Ceramides in the stratum corneum laver play an important role in barrier functions such as moisture retention, maintenance of skin architecture and protection. Dietary ceramides are thought to improve barrier functions and skin characteristics by stimulating synthesis of new ceramides within the skin, instead of ingested ceramides being directly utilized by the skin.
In a single-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 40 healthy adults were administered either 100 mg of Skin-Cera or a placebo for 6 weeks.' Results indicated that the Skin-Cera group saw a significant improvement in the overall dermatological diagnosis score at both 3 weeks and 6 weeks compared to the placebo. Furthermore, there was a significant improvement in individual skin characteristics including dryness, hyperpigmentation, itching and oiliness compared to the placebo group.
